Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. It is the case of sports betting (click here for more details), lotteries, bingo, poker, blackjack and casino games, just to mention some examples. But, what about FIFA Ultimate Team? It is gambling or not?
The first thing we should keep in mind is that gambling requires three elements be present: consideration, chance and prize. You have the three in poker or dice, for example, but not in FIFA Ultimate Team. It is true that there are rewards in the game but it doesn’t involves anything of monetary value. Fifa coins only have a monetary value for who breaks the Terms of Service (ToS).
Games of luck are games in which the results depend, either partially or totally, on luck. Practice does not increase a person’s chances of winning, and a player’s knowledge or skill has little or no control over the result. In FIFA Ultimate Team, there are a lot of things that experienced players can do to improve their chances to pull better cards. They will need luck to pull an In Form card but it is not just a matter of luck.
Contrary to popular belief, money is not the only reason why adolescents gamble. Money is used as a means to pursue gambling activities. Adolescents play for fun, excitement and to make money. Just like this app, Electronic Arts also offers an app to the younger ones play wherever they are. There are many things in common between FUT and gambling but it doesn’t mean that FIFA Ultimate Team is gambling. It is an important subject that should be discussed because if FIFA Ultimate Team is gambling, then it needs to be regulated. If doesn’t happen, problems like what is happening with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive developer Valve can happen with Electronic Arts too.
This year, there was an important addition to FIFA Ultimate Team: the Draft. Since it requires a payment to be played (real money or fifa coins), to avoid legal issues, EA guarantees that players will always win back their investment. Unfortunately, It is not always like that.
And you? What is your opinion? Is FIFA Ultimate Team Gambling? Why? Should EA change the age rating of the game?
