AILMENTS
Guinea pigs are fairly hardy pets; but occasionally may suffer from respiratory ailments. Coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge are symptoms of respiratory problems. Consult a veterinarian as soon as possible if these symptoms occur, and DO NOT use pet store remedies. These treatments may cause more harm than good.
- Diarrhea.
Diarrhea is often caused by too many greens or spoiled food. Withhold all fresh foods until stools are normal. If the diarrhea still persists, consult a veterinarian. - Parasites
Although it may be tempting, do not allow your guinea pig to roam your lawn, even if supervised. Your lawn may be home to fleas and ticks that are just waiting for a host to feed on. Lice and mites are usually the result of contact with infected animals and filthy cage conditions. If your animal appears to scratch or rub itself continually, consult a veterinarian for a pesticide approved for use on guinea pigs. - Ringworm
Ringworm is actually a fungal infection causing loss of hair (usually in patches) and reddening of the bare areas. Consult your vet immediately if you notice these symptoms on your pet, and always wash your hands after handling your guinea pig or any other animal - ringworm and a few other diseases can be transmitted to humans.
