I can tell you, and its only online unless you create a private server but that adds on about another £99 pounds to the proper game plus if you want all the characters and deathknight you will need both Expansions so thats a total of about £150 and most likely to be higher!

Why do we have to pay for these games if it costs you more money if you want to play it?

Many MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games) work on the subscription model, you pay x amount for the basic game then a monthly charge to stay online. Big game patches are sold as expansion packs to enhance gameplay for the characters. Others such as Guild Wars operate on a free online play with no subscription but still to get the most out of it require you to purchase the expansion packs. Out of all teh online games the only one I've ever enjoyed was Eve Online, WoW bored me, Star Wars Galaxies was dumbed down and became almost a WoW clone, Ever Quest never appealed either. i stick to offline gaming such as Civ 4 or Sins of a Solar empire

Try: Lord Of The Rings Online, Everquest, Guild Wars. They are all very similar.
