Michael Jackson's doctor is expected to be charged with the singer's involuntary manslaughter, US media reports say.

A spokeswoman for Dr Conrad Murray said he is expected to surrender to authorities within the next 48 hours.

If Dr Murray is charged, a judge would decide if he should then go on trial.

Michael Jackson's death, at the age of 50, in Los Angeles on 25 June last year was ruled as homicide, mainly caused by an anaesthetic.

Dr Murray has always maintained that he did not prescribe nor administer anything that should have killed Jackson.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorneys office told the BBC that so far nothing had been filed against Dr Murray.

Involuntary manslaughter occurs when a death is the indirect result of negligence or recklessness.

Powerful anaesthetic If he is charged, the doctor would face a hearing at which a judge would consider the evidence and decide whether Dr Murray should go on trial.

Jackson's death was primarily caused by the powerful anaesthetic Propofol, the Los Angeles coroner confirmed in August.

A cocktail of drugs - also including sedatives Midazolam and Diazepam, the painkiller Lidocaine and the stimulant Ephedrine - were detected in his body.

Dr Murray told police he had been giving Jackson Propofol as part of his treatment for insomnia, according to an affidavit made public in August. Clap

Michael Jackson's former doctor has denied a charge of involuntary manslaughter over the singer's death, at a court in Los Angeles.

Dr Conrad Murray was bailed for $75,000 (£48,000) after pleading not guilty to "unlawfully, and without malice, killing Michael Joseph Jackson".

A judge must decide whether to proceed to trial. A conviction could bring a jail term of up to four years. Clap

Michael Jackson's relatives are set to attend a court appearance later by the doctor accused of giving him a lethal dose of powerful anaesthetic.

Dr Conrad Murray, who is due at a preliminary hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said up to 15 relatives would be at the hearing.

A large number of journalists and fans are also expected.

Jackson's parents and brothers and sisters are among relatives expected in court.

California's attorney general has asked the judge to suspend Dr Murray's licence while he faces the charges.

But Dr Murray's lawyers have said he is "hanging on by a thread" financially.

"His ability to pay for his own defence depends almost entirely on his ability to continue to treat patients," they said in court documents.

Dr Murray has previously been ordered not to administer any anaesthetics as a condition of his $75,000 (£49,050) bail.

He is alleged to have administered a lethal dose of Propofol and other drugs, which resulted in the pop star's death on 25 June.

According to US reports, Dr Murray's legal team is to argue that Jackson accidentally killed himself by injecting himself with Propofol.

In court on Monday, a judge is expected to be assigned to the case and a date set for a preliminary hearing.

At that hearing, a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to go forward with a jury trial.

If convicted, Dr Murray faces up to four years in jail.

Michael Jackson's estate has made more than $1bn (£677m) since his death a year ago, according to estimates by trade paper Billboard.

The magazine says Jackson's album sales have generated about $383m (£259m), while revenue from the film This Is It has hit nearly $400m (£271m).

Profits from publishing rights, licensing and touring are also included in the total.

A new recording contract is estimated to have made $31m (£21m) so far.

The Sony Music Entertainment deal will see 10 albums of the late singer's music released over the next seven years, including one of previously unreleased material.

The estate is guaranteed between $200m (£135m) and $250m (£169.5m) for the deal but Billboard believes approximately $31m (£21m) of this will have been paid in the last 12 months.

Publishing profits

Despite the This Is It tour never getting off the ground, revenue from tickets retained by fans as souvenirs and not refunded brought in about $6.5m (£4.4m), with merchandise raking in $5m (£3.4m), although concert promoter AEG has a cut of these profits.

Jackson's music publishing company, Mijac, currently has a value of around $150m (£102m), according to Billboard.

The magazine said Mijac could have generated as much as $50m (£33.9m) in the last year.

Jackson's estate also owns half of music publishing company, Sony/ATV.

Barry Massarsky of Massarsky Consulting estimated that Jackson's share of Sony/ATV's revenue is $80m (£54.3m) a year.

Other profits have come from DVD sales and rentals, downloads, royalties and ringtones.

Jackson died on 25 June last year at the age of 50.

Jackson died in June 2009 at the age of 50

Seven doctors who treated Michael Jackson in the years before his death will not face criminal charges, US investigators have said.

However, one has been referred to California's state medical board for prescribing drugs under an alias.

Jackson's personal doctor Conrad Murray, who denies involuntary manslaughter, was not one of those questioned by state investigators.

He is accused of giving Jackson a lethal overdose of anaesthetic.

'Ignoring reality'

Los Angeles police had asked Californian state investigators to look into the way the doctors had prescribed drugs.

They searched a drug database, which monitors the prescription of controlled substances, as part of their investigation.

Lawyer Brian Oxman, who is representing Jackson's father in a wrongful death civil case, said he was "very disappointed".

"The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality," he said.

In his civil case, Joe Jackson accuses Dr Murray of professional negligence in administering a fatal mix of sedatives to the singer.

The Drug Enforcement Agency has also stopped investigating any other doctors who treated Jackson, a spokeswoman said.
